Volume Tiers

Suppliers price in tiers, and the step between a pallet, a part container and a full container is usually worth more than a negotiated discount.

Calculate which tier your annual volume reaches when orders are consolidated. Two full containers a year can be cheaper than twenty-four pallet orders, even after storage costs.

Shelf Life and Stock

Six months is the working shelf life in dry storage below 25 °C. A safety stock larger than that is not a safety stock, it is slow-moving inventory.

Size the buffer to the longest production run plus the transit time, and check the production date on arrival rather than the delivery date.

Reorder Points

Set the reorder point from consumption per week and lead time in weeks, plus a margin for the seasonal peak. Most stock-outs happen because the reorder point was set from average consumption rather than peak consumption.

Review the point twice a year. A change in product mix moves consumption without any announcement.
