Built-in hydrophobicity changes capillary absorption, and that is what HD2000 contributes to grouts and cement waterproofing coats.
HD2000 is a hard hydrophobic VAE powder with a minimum film forming temperature of 0 °C. Its value is not extra strength but a change in how the hardened mortar behaves when water arrives.
Water enters a cementitious mortar through capillaries left by evaporating mixing water. A hydrophobic powder lines those capillaries with a non-polar film so water cannot wet them.
The effect is measurable as a lower water uptake over time. It is not the same as a waterproof membrane: the mortar still has pores, it just refuses to fill them.
The hydrophobicity is built into the polymer rather than added as a separate silane, so it distributes with the binder during mixing. That keeps the effect where the polymer film is, which is the surface of the pores.
Because the base polymer is hard, the mortar keeps its strength and its shape. Softer hydrophobic grades exchange some of that strength for movement tolerance.
HD2000 improves water repellency, not crack bridging. A mortar that cracks still leaks, whatever the powder in it.
It is also not a substitute for a proper sealing slurry in a wet room or a tanking system below ground. Use it where a cementitious matrix has to stay drier, not where a membrane is required.
The grade this note is about, and two that sit next to it in the range.
Send the mortar system, the grade you are considering and the volume you plan for. The reply comes back with a dosage recommendation and a quotation.
